Guest Speaker: Dr. Carrie Wright, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Wright spent many years working with students and teachers in Howard County. During her time in HCPSS,
she served in various roles, including elementary principal and Director of Special Education. We are thrilled
that Dr. Wright is taking time from her busy schedule to visit with HEART to share her vision for Maryland
schools and students.

During the business portion of the meeting, we will address several items that are important to HEART's success, including our bylaws. The Executive values feedback from members and wants you to be an active participant as we address potential changes.  As always, we will also be sharing updates on membership (still rising), benefits, and expanded social opportunities.

We will be collecting donations for Comfort Cases and our local food banks.  Donation baskets will be set up to receive non-perishable food items, PJs, small blankets, journals, and new or gently used books to support those in our local
community and the greater Maryland area.

Members can register online or by mail, using the links above. And to make registration even more seamless,
we now accept four different payment options: a check by mail, cash or check the day of the event, or
electronically via Zelle.

Social Opportunities with HEART

NOT Back to School Happy Hour

The school year has started, but not for retirees! Join us Wednesday, September 25th, from 3-7PM for a NOT Back to School Happy Hour. We have reserved a private room at Glory Days in Ellicott City. The cost?  Only $10, which includes a wide assortment of hor'dourves and nonalcoholic drinks. A cash bar will also be available. Do you have a retired HCPSS friend who's not yet a member? Bring them along at no additional cost! (Please note we will be collecting payment in advance for this event.)

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas in Concert

HEART is headed back to The Music Center at Strathmore to listen to the wonderful music of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, with a movie! We have reserved tickets for Friday, October 25th. The BSO performs the Grammy-winning score live while the film is played on a big screen. Tickets are $45 a piece and available for HEART members, family, and friends.

But wait, there is more! Note the following HEART sponsored BSO performances at Strathmore throughout the coming year.

  • The Princess Bride in Concert -- Friday, January 3rd

  • Dancing in the Street: Music of Motown -- Friday, January 24th

  • Simply the Best: Music of Tina Turner -- Friday, February 21st

Toby's Dinner Theatre

Perhaps you prefer a bit more theatrics? We know many of you do, as evidenced from a record number of tickets sold (80) for Jersey Boys in July. Mark your calendar and join HEART at Toby's for the following shows.  Tickets are $68 a piece and, as always, available for HEART members, family, and friends.

  • Thursday, November 7th for The Adams Family, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family.  Tickets are $68 and, as always, family and friends are welcome.

  • Thursday, December 19th for The Sound of Music, one of the most beloved musicals of all time.

Backpack
Comfort Cases

We’re excited to introduce a new service project, Comfort Cases. Their mission, to “inspire communities to bring dignity and hope to youth in foster care,” helps support the 270,000+ youth who enter foster care each year. Most children arrive to their foster placement with little in the way of clothes or personal belongings. Comfort Cases staff supports foster children in two ways: by providing police and social workers with new duffle bags for children to transport their belongings, and by including in those bags special “cases” filled with comfort and essential items to ease the transition into foster care.

Click here to learn more about the Comfort Cases organization.

Suggested donations include personal items (deodorant, shampoo), pajamas (particularly larger sizes), unisex journals, and new/gently used books.
